A Whiteparish local history page from younsmere-frustfield.org.uk
This history comes in two parts: the first an introduction covering the geography and geology of the parish, together with a description of the various settlements, hamlets and farms. The second and larger part covers all aspects of its history in detail. Where appropriate the history is related to national and world affairs that impinged on and help to explain the story. These settings are arranged as side links to avoid interrupting the flow of Whiteparish history for those who prefer just to review the local material or whose knowledge of the wider issues is greater than mine.
Supplementing this material is a comprehensive review and critique of the available references, making much of this reference material available to a wider audience outside the public library for the first time. It is to be hoped that this will encourage others to add to the research and presentation of the history of the parish, the process of which would occupy many lifetimes.
Whiteparish boasts an active and enthusiastic local history group, and their first publication, "Whiteparish - 100 Years of an English Village, as told by the people of the village" was published to mark the millennium. Researched and compiled by Eric Chase, Jeanette and Don Munro, this book presents a remarkable collection of reminiscences and local stories in a very readable form, and is highly recommended. A more recent publication is A wander round Whiteparish by David Pantling, which takes the form of a guided walk round the village looking at key buildings and interesting aspects of their history and people.
